AFRESH – Activity & Food for Regional Economies Supporting Health is a mission statement of a 3-year project entitled: Countering diet-related diseases through competitive regional agrofood- and physical activity clusters. The project is funded by the European Union’s Seventh Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development. It began in September 2010 and is coordinated by the Stuttgart Region Economic Development Corporation (WRS) from Germany. The Project Consortium comprises partners from 8 regions in Europe:
- Stuttgart, Germany
- Flanders, Belgium
- Languedoc-Roussillon, France
- Galicia, Spain
- Merseyside, United Kingdom
- Nijmegen, Netherlands
- Mazovia, Poland
- Észak-Alföld, Hungary
AFRESH aims at reducing diet-related diseases by developing innovative research, products and services within the field of nutrition and physical activity. A Joint Action Plan was set up to foster the development of competitive health economies and to improve health of citizens during the whole lifespan. The novelty of the project lies in a holistic approach closing the gap between economic sectors related to agrofood and physical activity.
Research points to a necessary link between nutrition and physical activity, but regional health economies need better collaboration between triple-helix actors to tap this potential. Therefore eight regions’ participants join forces in a Regions of Knowledge project focused at increasing the competitiveness of regional economies which are already successful and at mentoring activities to help those to “get on board” where the collaboration within the triple-helix is insufficient.
